This post can be read one of two ways – either we are taxed too much, or the Texas state government isn’t too greedy and is willing to open the coffers – albeit for a brief stint.
For the last 10 years that I know of, Texas has been running surpluses in the budget. To “give” some of this back to the people that paid the taxes, each year there is a Sales Tax Holiday in the state of Texas. The holiday comes in the form of “turning off” the collection of sales taxes on certain items. Usually it is clothing and school related items (and typically the items have to be under $100 each).
This year the Holiday is running from August 15 -17, 2008. It is a great way to save 7.5% – 8.25% (depending on local taxation rules) on items normally purchased. Many retailers capitalize on this by also offering promotions to coincide and increase the savings. Therefore, go forth and spend (and save).
